Twas the Night Before School Starts...

Yup... school starts tomorrow. Time to say hello to working 40 hours a week. And early wake-ups where I actually have to do something with my morning rather than sit on the couch and watch the Today Show. And spending my days with teeny-boppers and their drama. And trying to teach them math at the same time.

Oh, and making milkshakes?

Not so much for school. More for my Business Man. One night when I was browsing Pinterest he spotted a picture over my shoulder. For Cake Batter Smoothies. Of course the recipe linked the picture to a healthy recipe. Using all these crazy ingredients like frozen bananas (ok not so crazy), coconut oil, xantham gum, guar gum, cashew butter. What the junk?!

So off we went scouring the internet for a non-healthy recipe with ingredients we already had. Heh. And we found one over at Confessions of a Cookbook Queen. And this is definitely not a healthy milkshake. And yes, it is now a milkshake, not a smoothie.

Yes, we have sugar, cream, processed foods, with a side of more sugar, cream, and processed foods. Oh, and the milk! That's dairy!
For one milkshake, you need:
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons white or Funfetti cake mix (or 'Party Rainbow Chip' if you're a Betty Crocker fan like myself)
  • 1/4 cup vanilla frosting
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream
  • whipped cream & sprinkles (for garnish)

It all goes into the blender, and voila! You have a Cake Batter Milkshake.

And yes, it's sweet. Very sweet. So sweet that I had 2 sips. And stopped. That's sayin' something.

But my Business Man has had one the last 2 nights... he's in love. I kinda want to try a chocolate version. Or red velvet. Mmmmm....

So school starts tomorrow. Today was our teacher workday. I thought I'd share some pics of my classroom because I have finally taken the time to organize and decorate. (After a whole year of teaching.) I'm hoping to have at least some semblance of organization this year... at least for the first couple weeks. Ha!

Here's my desk. Pretty clutter-free as of today. That will soon change.

Can you spy my cute lil' cupcake candle?
And the side of the room where I have my supplies. I actually have supplies this year. I bit the bullet and bought a classroom set of rulers, protractors, scissors, markers, crayons. It should make life a lot easier.

I got a lot of 'summer decor' items at Meijer for 75% off that I am using as storage bins/containers. Such fun colors!
The back table for group-work.

That bowl of candy will not be staying there. It would be gone within 20 minutes.
The whole classroom. We are going to try sitting in partners. We shall see what happens.

And... last but not least, my bulletin boards.

We have a new bell schedule this year. I am hoping our kids all make it to school by 8am. (Last year's start time was 8:18am.)
Classroom expectations - I got this graphic from Pinterest and had it printed on a poster. I like it. :)
So, that's it! Here's to a great first day tomorrow. I'm excited to see some kidd-os from last year and meet my new students for this year!

Wow... I can't believe I have never seen your class room until now! It looks great. I love the 'In Our Classroom' poster.

Hot Off the Press... [Chicken Bacon Bleu Panini]

So I totally forgot to post a panini recipe last Thursday... whoops. I'm sure you were all waiting with bated breath and were very  disappointed. Well, never fear, because I've got a fabulous panini recipe tonight! Tangy bleu cheese and salty bacon come together to form a delectable sandwich. It comes from the panini cookbook I received for Christmas, 200 Best Panini Recipes  (thanks Mom!) . The  Chicken Bacon Bleu panini :   grilled chicken, crisp bacon, and bleu cheese on sourdough with a spread of barbecue sauce and sliced red onion. I had never thought of putting bleu cheese on a panini before I saw this recipe. I feared there wouldn't be enough ooey gooey cheese! But bleu cheese actually melts pretty nicely. It's no Velveeta, but it added a great tang to the sandwich.  First, spread the bottom piece of bread with a bit of barbecue sauce, and top with some grilled chicken. I actually used my panini press to grill my chicken for the first time, and it wa

The Arrival of Something New...

Woo hoo for the last Friday of the school year! And only one more day of school next week. (And then a couple teacher workshops...) Another reason to be excited? Our fridge came today!! Isn't she a beauty? It is so nice to have a fridge again. You don't realize how much you miss a full-size refrigerator until you go a couple weeks without it. A bit bare... but that can be solved easily. Bottom-drawer freezer, containing the essentials: moose tracks & Diet Dew trying to get cold asap. Anyways, I'm just popping in to share my beautiful new appliance. The baking monster has taken over, and I'm in the midst of making 150 cupcakes for a graduation party tomorrow.  First big baking project in the new kitchen! I'm loving all the counter space. Mmm... chocolate buttercream! Making good use of the baking nook! :) Adios!

Boston Marathon, week #3

Last week was a great week for training - lots of easy runs, a V02-max workout, and my first long run that actually felt 'long'.  The goal was to get in 50-55 miles, and I ended up with 56ish, so right on target. Saturday's long run was glorious ! Temps in the 50's in January (!) makes me a very happy runner. I headed out for 16-17 miles and ended up with almost 18. And I remembered to bring fuel!  I tried out the blueberry-pomegranate Gu chomps, and they weren't my favorite. I ate one every 2 miles once I hit the 8-mile mark and they left a strange aftertaste. Pretty much as soon as the aftertaste went away, it would be time to eat one again. I'm thinking I will try something else next time.  This was the week of the 8's... what a monotonous bar graph. I'll try better next week to make it a little more exciting. Weekly Rundown 1.7.2013-1.13.2013 Mon - 8.2 miles easy Tues - 8.3 miles easy Wed - 4x1200m @ 4:29 (4:32, 4:31, 4:31, 4:34);
