the first two weeks

A certain someone celebrated his 2-week birthday today... how can it be that two weeks have passed in the blink of an eye? But at the same time, it seems like we've had him home with us forever? (Perhaps when you are awake at all hours of the day, it seems like each day has 48 hours instead of 24...)

Heading home from the hospital.
I don't really have a ton of coherent thoughts, but wanted to jot down what's running through my head so I can look back on it and laugh several months down the road.

A little milk drunk after a feeding.
The first night home from the hospital was ROUGH. Lol. We had no idea what to expect and I think I woke up once every hour. Either because James needed something, or I just had to stare at him to make sure he was still breathing. (Newsflash to Sara: he will still breathe even when you aren't watching him.)

Napping in his big boy crib. He is still sleeping in a bassinet in our room at night.
Growing up as an only child, I haven't really had too much experience with babies... especially baby boys. Let's just say that controlling the pee during diaper changes has become a sport in itself. One time he even peed all over the mirror above his changing table. No worries, I only screamed loud enough to wake up my Business Man.

1-week old
On the Saturday after we brought him home from the hospital, I was so excited because I actually put real clothes on, for a luxurious 45-minute outing to the grocery store. I was so excited to be able to wear a new purple fleece that I had bought in September in anticipation of not being pregnant anymore. I decided to quickly change his diaper before I left, and he decided to projectile poo mid-diaper change. And I ended up with mustard yellow baby poo all over my new fleece. I'm sure this isn't the first time that'll happen.

My parents came out to visit for Thanksgiving, which was a lot of fun. We didn't do anything too crazy, except eat a bunch of yummy food and enjoy lots of Jamesy-boy cuddles.

"Hmmm... which type of pie shall I have today?"

Lots of Grammy cuddles.
[Funny story: I ordered a smoked turkey from a local BBQ place for Thanksgiving dinner so we wouldn't have to mess with cooking a turkey. I got a call the day before Thanksgiving from a number in Defiance (about 1 hour away) asking if I was going to be picking up my turkey. I said "Yes... but I ordered the turkey from the Lima location." Ummm, no Sara, you didn't. My turkey was definitely in Defiance. Insert emotional breakdown here with sobbing and crying to my Business Man. Postpartum hormones are no joke! Thankfully, he made the trek up to Defiance that night so we weren't turkey-less for the big holiday.]

The spread.

Perhaps the best Chocolate Cream Pie I've ever had?!

And definitely the best Maple Streusel Pumpkin Pie I've ever had.
As frustrating and tiring as this adventure has been so far, it is SO worth it when I see my sweet boy. How can you feel so much love for a person you've only known for a few weeks? Even in the middle of the night, he is just so darn cute. From his little snorts to silly grins to frantic cries, I just can't believe that he's really ours. Those big eyes get me every time.

Taking after his daddy from the start.

Samoa-what?

So. Last night I did some baking. For my Business Man. Leaning tower of... cookie bars? Before I tell you all about it, let's rewind a bit... Last week when I was gone traversing the Midwest , our order of Girl Scout cookies came in. (finally!) They got here on Monday. When I spoke with my Business Man Tuesday night, he informed me that the box of Caramel Delights was gone. Gone! I would have been shocked and horrified and disappointed if I actually liked coconut, but alas I just shook my head and laughed. Those cookies didn't stand a chance with my Business Man locked in the same apartment for any length of time. The real deal. Just to prove his love for Caramel Delights even further, let me tell you this little story. L ast year  I came out to visit one weekend and take the oh-so-enjoyable Praxis tests. We stopped at Family Video after the tests to pick up a few movies for the afternoon/evening. There happened to be some cute lil' Girl Scouts trying ...

Day 8: Brownie-Covered Oreos

Today's cookie recipe has two ingredients. Yup, just two! Brownie mix and a package of Oreos. So simple that my Business Man could make them! I saw this recipe over at Picky-Palate , and immediately had to try it. I love incorporating Oreos into my baked goods. We even had Oreo Cupcakes at our wedding! And who could forget about Oreo Truffles? (Also known as Snowman Poop in my circle of friends...) After tasting them, I must say these are divine! And so simple. Perfect for the chocoholic in your life. (aka me!) The cookie gets a little soft inside the brownie, and it's just a chocolate explosion in your mouth! You will want to have a glass of milk handy. Just have to show off our tree some more! First things first, mix up your brownie mix. If you want a lot of Brownie-covered Oreos, use a large brownie mix. If you don't need as many, use a smaller brownie mix. My favorite brownie mix is Ghiradelli , but it can be kinda pricey. Usually I just buy what's on sale....

Day 7: Buried Cherry Cookies

I don't remember where my mom & I got this recipe... we started baking these about 8 years ago. And haven't stopped since! The name says it all - there is a 'buried cherry' in each cookie. The cookie itself is chewy and chocolatey, and inside there's a surprise cherry! It's all topped with a unique type of frosting; it is poured over the cookie before  it's baked. It's like a cookie version of a chocolate-covered cherry! (Without all that nasty sweet white goo inside...) Here's a step-by-step break-down: Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Make an indentation in each ball. Place a cherry in each indentation. Make the frosting. (And don't forget to lick the spoon. And scrape the sides of the pan.) Top with the frosting. Bake! And then wonder what to do with the leftover 1/2 can of sweetened condensed milk. (What kind of recipe only calls for 1/2 cup?) I guess I could be like my friend Jen , as she tol...
