Boston Marathon, Week #2

2 weeks down, just 14 to go! Haha... not a good way to think about marathon training.

This week was super-fab, though the temps have been quite frigid! I only succumbed to the temptation of the treadmill once, so I'm quite proud of myself for that.

Tuesday was January 1 (duh), and I participated in the annual New Year's Chili Run. It's a fun run that is hosted by a member of the run club here in the Bean Town. 10 miles with friends was the perfect way to kick off 2013. Too bad I couldn't convince my Business Man to join me. Not even the lure of warm chili could get him there!

My speedwork of the week was 5x1km @ V02-max with 3:00 jog recovery. The day I ran this, it was super icy out... so I took it to the treadmill. Yup, I had that dreaded machine flying at 10.0-10.2mph; it's no wonder I didn't fly off the back of it! It went well though, and it was better than slipping & sliding and breaking something on the ice.

On Saturday, I ran my first long run/speed session, and it was actually quite fun! (As fun as frolicking about for 2 hours in 18*F weather can be.) I had a 2-mile warm-up followed by 5x1-mile at threshold pace (6:32) with 1-min standing recovery. Then, just run an hour easy. NBD.

It really wasn't too bad. I hit the pace for the repeats pretty easily (consistent at 6:28-6:29) - it was the looooong cool down that scared me. But I felt great up until the last 10-15 minutes. However I am quite sore today, but that's understandable.

Weekly Rundown 12.31.2012-1.6.2013
Mon - 7.8 miles easy
Tues - 10 miles easy
Wed - 5x1km @ 3:44 (3:45, 3:45, 3:43, 3:41, 3:41); 8 miles total
Thurs - 7.4 miles easy
Fri - Off
Sat - 2 mi + 5x1-mile @ 6:32 (6:28, 6:28, 6:29, 6:28, 6:29) + 1 hour easy; 15.6 miles total LONG

Sun - 6.3 miles easy
Total - 55.2 miles

So, I'm still feeling good. Next week, my long run bumps up to 16 or 17, so that'll be fun.

Other news of the week:

  • We went back to school on Thursday. It was a little rough. This week should be better... more of a chance to get in the swing of things. And we have semester exams Thursday-Friday, and those days are always really easy. Minus the grading.
  • My mom came to visit this weekend since my dad was out of town on business. We had a lot of fun bumming around. And shopping. And making delicious food. And of course she brought Maggie, so that's always a blast.

  • WE FINISHED THE PUZZLE! Haha... last Sunday we started a 1000-piece puzzle. 'For fun.' Well, we finally finished it 6 days later. And then my Business Man proceeded to crumble it up and put it back in the box today... just one day of puzzle enjoyment.
RIP puzzle
And I will leave you with this article from Runner's World about New Year's resolutions... I agree wholeheartedly -  Resolved.

Wow Sar, how do you have that much time in the day?? Who does 1000 piece puzzles anymore? Not to mention also runs, bakes, and has time to "bum around"? I'm thinking you don't watch much TV, and I'm thinking I need to cut a lot of TV out of my day. Is that your secret?

What is NBD? I could google it, but I am lazy. I am thinking about breaking out Jack Daniels and writing myself a training plan...my 2 weeks of bad decisions has turned into 17 days of bad decisions (whoops). Off to read the Runner's World Article.

Day 7: Buried Cherry Cookies

I don't remember where my mom & I got this recipe... we started baking these about 8 years ago. And haven't stopped since! The name says it all - there is a 'buried cherry' in each cookie. The cookie itself is chewy and chocolatey, and inside there's a surprise cherry! It's all topped with a unique type of frosting; it is poured over the cookie before  it's baked. It's like a cookie version of a chocolate-covered cherry! (Without all that nasty sweet white goo inside...) Here's a step-by-step break-down: Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Make an indentation in each ball. Place a cherry in each indentation. Make the frosting. (And don't forget to lick the spoon. And scrape the sides of the pan.) Top with the frosting. Bake! And then wonder what to do with the leftover 1/2 can of sweetened condensed milk. (What kind of recipe only calls for 1/2 cup?) I guess I could be like my friend Jen , as she tol...

Hot Off the Press... [Chicken Bacon Bleu Panini]

So I totally forgot to post a panini recipe last Thursday... whoops. I'm sure you were all waiting with bated breath and were very  disappointed. Well, never fear, because I've got a fabulous panini recipe tonight! Tangy bleu cheese and salty bacon come together to form a delectable sandwich. It comes from the panini cookbook I received for Christmas, 200 Best Panini Recipes  (thanks Mom!) . The  Chicken Bacon Bleu panini :   grilled chicken, crisp bacon, and bleu cheese on sourdough with a spread of barbecue sauce and sliced red onion. I had never thought of putting bleu cheese on a panini before I saw this recipe. I feared there wouldn't be enough ooey gooey cheese! But bleu cheese actually melts pretty nicely. It's no Velveeta, but it added a great tang to the sandwich.  First, spread the bottom piece of bread with a bit of barbecue sauce, and top with some grilled chicken. I actually used my panini press to grill my chicken for the first ti...

The Arrival of Something New...

Woo hoo for the last Friday of the school year! And only one more day of school next week. (And then a couple teacher workshops...) Another reason to be excited? Our fridge came today!! Isn't she a beauty? It is so nice to have a fridge again. You don't realize how much you miss a full-size refrigerator until you go a couple weeks without it. A bit bare... but that can be solved easily. Bottom-drawer freezer, containing the essentials: moose tracks & Diet Dew trying to get cold asap. Anyways, I'm just popping in to share my beautiful new appliance. The baking monster has taken over, and I'm in the midst of making 150 cupcakes for a graduation party tomorrow.  First big baking project in the new kitchen! I'm loving all the counter space. Mmm... chocolate buttercream! Making good use of the baking nook! :) Adios!
