48 Hours Later...

In just 48 hours, lots of work has been done. Most of it not done by me. But I try!

Stairs... (right when you walk in the front door.)
We discovered there was hardwood under the foyer, staircase, upstairs hallway, and butler's pantry/breakfast nook.

Upstairs hallway.
You know what that meant? 928,301,292,746 more staples and tacks to pull up.

I'm so thankful for my hard-working daddy and my Business Man's brother who is helping us out this week. They're awesome, pulling 14-hour days. I'm a wimp, and admit defeat after just a few hours.

This afternoon, I learned how awesome Krudkutter is.

Long, long ago, in the guest bedroom, little droplets of paint somehow got all over the floor. The beautiful hardwood floor.

So today, I got to use Krudkutter to scrape it all up. I think that was almost more fun than pulling up staples! ;-)

The previously paint-splattered guest bedroom. It has since been painted as well.
Note to self: Never splatter paint on hardwood floors. Also, never cover up hardwood floors with ugly carpet. It's a huge pain to remove.

Other notable things... my dad fixed the bathroom sink! It no longer leaks water all over the floor when you use it. Definitely a plus.

Yes, there's an air mattress lying on top of the tub. Don't ask.
This nastiness was inside the sink pipes. Yuck!!
My Business Man learned how to varnish floors. (2 of the rooms only need to be re-varnished, not sanded and stained first.)

This is our room. He said it was just like mopping. I didn't get a chance to try this. (Probably a good thing.)
The polyurethane looks like honey, in my opinion. It does not smell like honey. Don't get polyurethane confused with honey and put it on your PB sandwich. That would probably be a bad idea.

Honey in a paint tray.

After two nights of take-out, I decided we needed a home-cooked meal tonight. (Or... maybe I just needed an excuse to be able to stop working and go back to our apartment and cook?)

I made chili. It was good. Have I shared my chili recipe yet? It's not really mine; it's my Business Man's mom's recipe. But it's really good.

And yes, it's not really chili season, the middle of May. But it's been rainy and in the 50s all week and it sounded good. Usually we make it in the crockpot, but I didn't get started until 7pm, so it's still bubbling on the stove. (No worries, I had a bowl already. It just needs to season and blend flavors a bit longer. So the leftovers will be even tastier.)

Chili

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 16-oz. can diced tomatoes
  • 2 16-oz. cans tomato sauce
  • 2 16-oz. cans chili beans
  • 2 tbsp. chili powder
  •  cup brown sugar

Method

Brown beef and onion; drain off fat. Combine all ingredients and cook in crock pot 4-6 hours on low.

Or, you can simmer in a big pot for a couple hours. Still tastes very good!

Stay tuned for more house updates! Hopefully we will be able to move in this weekend...

So exciting! I love watching the progress, because we're building a house and going through all this fun stuff!

Day 7: Buried Cherry Cookies

I don't remember where my mom & I got this recipe... we started baking these about 8 years ago. And haven't stopped since! The name says it all - there is a 'buried cherry' in each cookie. The cookie itself is chewy and chocolatey, and inside there's a surprise cherry! It's all topped with a unique type of frosting; it is poured over the cookie before  it's baked. It's like a cookie version of a chocolate-covered cherry! (Without all that nasty sweet white goo inside...) Here's a step-by-step break-down: Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Make an indentation in each ball. Place a cherry in each indentation. Make the frosting. (And don't forget to lick the spoon. And scrape the sides of the pan.) Top with the frosting. Bake! And then wonder what to do with the leftover 1/2 can of sweetened condensed milk. (What kind of recipe only calls for 1/2 cup?) I guess I could be like my friend Jen , as she tol...

Hot Off the Press... [Chicken Bacon Bleu Panini]

So I totally forgot to post a panini recipe last Thursday... whoops. I'm sure you were all waiting with bated breath and were very  disappointed. Well, never fear, because I've got a fabulous panini recipe tonight! Tangy bleu cheese and salty bacon come together to form a delectable sandwich. It comes from the panini cookbook I received for Christmas, 200 Best Panini Recipes  (thanks Mom!) . The  Chicken Bacon Bleu panini :   grilled chicken, crisp bacon, and bleu cheese on sourdough with a spread of barbecue sauce and sliced red onion. I had never thought of putting bleu cheese on a panini before I saw this recipe. I feared there wouldn't be enough ooey gooey cheese! But bleu cheese actually melts pretty nicely. It's no Velveeta, but it added a great tang to the sandwich.  First, spread the bottom piece of bread with a bit of barbecue sauce, and top with some grilled chicken. I actually used my panini press to grill my chicken for the first ti...

The Arrival of Something New...

Woo hoo for the last Friday of the school year! And only one more day of school next week. (And then a couple teacher workshops...) Another reason to be excited? Our fridge came today!! Isn't she a beauty? It is so nice to have a fridge again. You don't realize how much you miss a full-size refrigerator until you go a couple weeks without it. A bit bare... but that can be solved easily. Bottom-drawer freezer, containing the essentials: moose tracks & Diet Dew trying to get cold asap. Anyways, I'm just popping in to share my beautiful new appliance. The baking monster has taken over, and I'm in the midst of making 150 cupcakes for a graduation party tomorrow.  First big baking project in the new kitchen! I'm loving all the counter space. Mmm... chocolate buttercream! Making good use of the baking nook! :) Adios!
